Tundra Cold Weather Balaclava
DWR Softshell with Merino

Staying longer in the field often necessitates staying warm no matter how low the mercury drops. For those of us who hunt in the extreme cold--whether it's active big game hunting, long days in the stand or waiting out the morning on a sub zero waterfowl hunt, the Tundra Cold Weather Balaclava is the answer. Featuring a combination of softshell construction to keep you dry, Merino face mask so that you can call and breathe, as well as an ultra-warm synthetic shearling liner, this is next-level protection in winter's worst weather.

Your teeth should never chatter again 8/31/2018

If you hunt in cold and windy areas, you have to get this! The outer shell has a great dwr shell that will be good for being in the duck swamp but also has an incredible inside wool loft that feels great against your face. Your teeth should never chatter again wearing this from being cold!

Don't leave home without it 8/30/2018

This is on my head, around my neck, or at least in my backpack every hunt other than the earliest season hunts. Keeping your neck and ears warm when you're sitting in a tree for hours on end make it so much easier to wait for last light.

This epitomizes First Lite's "Stay Longer" philosophy 8/30/2018

First and foremost, this must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. It is not your typical $50 piece. The softshell and merino panels work well together, and the sherpa style lining locks in as much heat as you can produce. The lining is very soft and feels good against the skin, and there's enough stretch/flex in the various panels to get it on easily and manipulate it into the position you want, even if you already have something else on your head already. Visibility is very good.

Must have when it’s cold 8/30/2018

Great when it is cold, mouth cover dries quickly. Put an extra hat on top for cold tree stand hunts, keeps wind off your neck.

Keeps your face and head warm (and hidden) during late season treestand bow hunting 8/30/2018

I tend to bow hunt all season, and getting into late December some mornings can be brutal here in NY. This balaclava is sooo comfy and warm. It is a must take when the temps drop below 20 for me (definitely bit too warm in early season). Can't recommend it enough.

Great purchase! 8/30/2018

Not had a chance to wear in cold weather yet, but it seems like it’s made really well and fits great. My husband was so happy with it he now needs more first lite cold weather gear.

Top notch build quality 8/29/2018

The neck and head has plenty of warmth, face is thinner and breathable without feeling smothered, or squishing your nose down. Long enough to be tucked well under the neck of your shirt to keep the cold out.

Heavy Duty 8/29/2018

This balaclava is sherpa fleece lined (synthetic) and has EXP weight merino face panel. The exterior is a DWR treated softshell material. Just wearing it around the house and it is extremely warm. I will be breaking this out for the coldest sits of the year and expect it should handle whatever I can throw at it.

How it fits
Fits my big noggin' very well. Not too tight or restrictive.

Better than expected 8/29/2018

This balaclava is better quality than I expected. It is fleece lined and very warm. Was thankful I had this the last day of archery season last year when the day started out at 11 degrees. Well done.

Warmth for days 6/27/2018

I've been looking for something for years to keep my head warm in the tree stand during long and cold sits during the late season in NY and this was the ticket. I've used this during day long tree stand sits in temps that didn't get above freezing and it kept me warm all day. I also love the versatility of this balaclava. Can be warn with a hat or beanie if necessary. Can also be pulled above the nose or below the chin depending on preference. Fantastic product.

Very warm 2/11/2018

Since I wear glasses I can never wear a balcalva without my glasses fogging up. The material is more like a mesh around the nose on this one it doesn't fog up enough and is easy to wear pulled down around my nose. Wore is down to -10 in the late season this year and kept my ears and head warm.

Nice, but.... 12/4/2017

I really enjoyed this Balaklava in the cold weather of upper Peninsula Michigan. However the one downfall is the piece that goes over the face sometimes gets stretched out and will not stay up. The good thing is so far after I wash it it will return to its shape.

Awesome Balaclava 11/27/2017

This balaclava was amazing while glassing here in Cascade, MT where it's always windy! Keeps your face warm and cuts the wind better than other balaclavas I've owned. Love that it's not thick in the mouth area so you can still breath fine. Best balaclava I own.

Extremely Impressed 11/25/2017

I had the chance to put this item to use for three straight days during a Wisconsin early November bow hunt and it lived up to every claim FL has made. I always try to make an honest review when I write up a piece of gear because other folks need their gear to perform exactly as they expect it to. So for that reason even if the gear is overall excellent but has a feature or two that isn't ideal I try to make a point to address it. I can't find one with this balaclava. The visibility is perfect, the comfort is perfect (the inside lining is amazing) and most importantly it keeps you warm outside in the cold. I was midwest tree stand hunting, which of course means hours at a time sitting/standing still. The temperatures I sat in were 24-34 all day and while I did get a little cold because I didn't layer my lower body well enough, my head and face never felt a thing. What I especially noticed was that even in a constant cold breeze where my hands and any exposed skin quickly got cold, this piece blocked it completely. I have no trouble believing this balaclava will perform as well down into the teens and even single digits. Great job, FL.

Extreme comfort in extreme cold 11/21/2017

I have taken this out in -15°C... and almost found it too warm. My face was sweating. It's that effective. I'm glad I have this as I'll be using it on my arctic hunts in the years to come! I would definitely feel comfortable hunting in -30°C with this balaclava on.

Excellent 11/21/2017

Everything as advertised, another FL quality product.

Really wonderful 11/18/2017

Went tent camping and hunting on Veteran's Day weekend with this balaclava. First morning was very cold, but this did a great job of keeping me warm and comfortable in the stand. Got my first deer wearing it!

Awesome for cold weather 11/13/2017

This is a nice snug fit to keep heat in and protect you from the elements. Could be longer in the neck so it layers under your coat better but other then that, it is solid piece to keep your head warm, keep wind off your face and provide concealment at the same time. Easy to pull the front down to eat or drink and it doesn't seem like it will stretch over time.

Nickname: Kenneth
Overall warm 11/10/2017

Very warm and comfortable but the wool face mask keeps sliding down so I have to keep adjusting and moving in my tree stand or let my face get cold

Nickname: Jeb
Very warm. Quality built. 11/9/2017

Thought I would test this out for work/hunting this winter. Haven't hit single digits yet but I have been toasty warm in the low teens. On top of that it is very comfortable to wear. I wouldn't wear it over 30-40 degrees fahrenheit or you will ROAST. It is a 5 star product I only gave it 4 because it lacks color options.

Warm + well-designed 10/26/2017

I have multiple balaclavas and this is by far the warmest and most comfortable. The shearling liner is soft and warm and, unlike some other fabrics, it's not itchy. The fabric in front of the mouth is breathable and didn't ice up even when it was below freezing and we were hiking hard. This piece definitely kept my head warm during the high winds and below freezing temps elk hunting.

Favorite Head Cover 10/24/2017

This is one of my all time favorite head covers. Especially when it is windy and cold. The Tundra performs exceptional.

Super Warm 9/5/2017

Much warmer than the Wind River Balaclava. Awesome for stationary hunting. This will keep your head warm.

Blew Me Away, Impressive 1/5/2017

I own a lot of First Lite articles and this Balaclava was incredibly impressive, it delivered beyond my expectations. The fit, the comfort and the performance were all out this world. I hunted late December Whitetail in Minnesota out of a tree stand hunting without a hat and this Balaclava was all I needed in below 15 degree weather. Another thing that surprised me was how well I could hear my surroundings. Great work you guys! Now, make a hand warmer muff out of the same materials!

New cold weather go to.. 12/12/2016

I saw this Balaclava at ATA for the first time and wasn't sure I'd wear it it over my beanie and regular merino neck gator. I ended up buying it and I had an opportunity to try it this year late season in 7 degree weather on a 4 hr evening sit and I loved it. Its very warm and super comfortable. I like that I could move the face mask portion down if I wanted to and I definitely liked the fleece lining. I even wore a merino beanie cap over top of the Balaclava to hold a little tighter compression on my head and I stayed very warm and comfortable. If you're looking for a good late season piece I'd recommend checking this Balaclava out.

Heady comfort 9/28/2016

One of the most comfortable pieces of headwear I have ever worn. Cannot wait to wear it for the coming season's bone-chilling days.

Warm and Comfortable 9/4/2016

This cold weather balaclava is warm and comfortable. The fleece lining on the inside is awesome. I haven't got a chance to test it out in extremely cold conditions yet, but I'm looking forward to using it for duck season as well as on the mountain while skiing. The soft shell on the outside looks like it will block the wind well and be water resistant. I only wish it was offered in all black as well. I would defiantly recommend this to any one that is going to be out in cold during winter time regardless of the activity.
