I was able to use my first lite gear for the first time today and can say I have no regrets with my purchases. While grouse hunting in Michigan today, the weather had temps in mid-upper 20’s, light wind, and it was going back and forth from sunshine to snowing. Typical Michigan. These pants were excellent and helped keep me warm during our hunt! I wore them over top of a jean type pant and they still had plenty of room for movement and I didn’t feel restricted in any area. I was a little concerned with how the pants were going to look after walking thru so much briar but when I looked them over at home I didn’t see a single snag on the material. I would definitely suggest these as a pant to wear while keeping active in cooler temps. Might not be the best choice for outdoor activities when your temps and movements are both low.
I bought the catalyst soft shell jacket and pant set for this year’s hunting season. My hope was that I would be able to regulate my body temperature to avoid a Raynaud's attack. For those of you that don’t know what Raynaud Syndrome is... it’s a condition that constricts small arteries in your body in response to cold. In turn, limiting blood supply to the affected area (fingers and toes). In short, I have to stay warm to keep blood flowing to my fingers and toes. I mostly spot and stalk hunt so this set up did great when hiking around in 20+ degree weather (PNW). I paired it with the Kiln top and bottom base layers. Now, when temps moved up to the 30s, I had to dress down to just my kiln top. I did make an attempt to sit in the catalyst set however, after about an hour I needed to move again (now that can be because I wasn’t wearing the best boots either... lesson learned).
I typically wear a medium however after speaking to a First Lite rep I chose to go with a large (med base layer tho) with the intention of laying more than the average person. I love that the jacket and pants are super quite when chasing elk through downed trees and a maze of branches in the dense woods.
The catalyst set did just as I expected and as it was described it would do. First Lite did a great job on an awesome hunting set for women.
Before purchasing these pants, I had never owned a pair of First Lite pants. Happy to report that these actually fit perfectly and are extremely comfortable. The fabric makes them very easy to hike in and it's very quiet for stalking. They are great for mid-season or layered for colder weather. I have worn these during elk season and a few mornings of duck season so far. I ordered my normal size, based on the size chart and these are great. Normally, pants that fit my waist are tight in the hip and thigh, but these are not. They have a more curvy fit so there is no tightness anywhere. I would like for the ankle to be a bit wider to fit further over my boots, but these are sufficient and the slimmer design makes them good for walking and not getting caught in brush.
I recently purchased these pants as I wanted to upgrade my current hunting gear. I hunt in Virginia with temperatures ranging 20-40 degrees most of the season. These pants appear to be great quality and warm, but the sizing is really distorted in my opinion. I am 5'4 and 140 pounds and generally wear a 6/8 in pants so I ordered a medium. The medium was not only too small but was also shorter that I would have liked. I am not a tall girl by any means, so anyone over 5'6 would be too tall for these pants. I also felt they were not roomy at all - no room for layering. I have purchased First Lite items in the past with no issues, but I would say overall the brand runs small. Disappointed to be returning these pants considering I paid $20 to have them in time for a hunting trip. Not worth the money in my opinion.
