Good all around 5/15/2019

I ordered this in dry earth. I haven’t been able to field test it yet so I can not vouch for how it performed in field. However after trying it on at the house I feel like it is going to be a good mid layer piece. Can deff be worn as outer layer on warmer days. I will probably use it more for everyday wear rather than hunting but I will use for both. Seems to be very quality though and I think I will end up loving this piece!

How it fits
Fit is a little different on this one for me personally. I think I am in between a med and a large. I ordered a large and the sleeves are skin tight from wrist to shoulder and actually rather long. However it is a little big in the torso area. I think a medium would be too tight so I will stick with the large I think.

A Must Have Piece 5/10/2019

I bought the Kiln hoodie last summer and immediately loved it. Then I hunted all season with it and loved it so much I bought another one but in black. I work in TV broadcast covering some of the biggest sporting events in the world and this hoodie is with me at every show. The combination of keeping body heat in, wicking sweat off the body and not smelling bad makes this a must for every hunter.

New Favorite Hoody! 4/30/2019

After much debate on which pieces of First Lite gear to buy for turkey season this year I went with the Kiln Hoody for part of my gear and it was a great choice! This hoody was paired with a long sleeve and a tee-shirt and ran me from early morning to evening. I ran it solo during mid-day hunts and it worked great. Temps for this hunt were in the mid 30's to the low 70's and this hoody kept me comfortable all day! Went with the fusion pattern and it worked great in the woods of Northern New Mexico. Will be looking to buy one in a solid color for everyday wear!

How it fits
The large allowed for me to layer underneath without it feeling bulky and when worn alone stayed close to skin and did not have a baggy feel.

Does it all 4/27/2019

This thing is a beast but with the finesse you need under an outer shell. I have worn this thing in PA treestand under my bibs and coat, I have worn it under my blaze game vest during unseasonably warm squirrel hunting, I have worn it surf fishing in Delaware, and list goes on. If I am going to be in the out-of-doors this thing will be at least with me if not on my. If everything first lite sells works this well I will have to slowly replace all my gear. I would give it 6 stars if they would let me.

How it fits
Fits as stated. I wear it over a t shirt usually and often under an outer layer.

Best base layer I own 4/19/2019

I bought the Kiln Hoody in conifer for an Alaska hunt. It ended up being my everyday "go to" hoody to wear under jackets to the gym, at work (my office is freezing in winter) and at home. The sleeves are a little long in medium for me, but I roll them up and it works perfect. I will be buying another Kiln Hoody when the new 2019 stock comes in.

Most versatile piece of clothing I own 4/10/2019

This is by far the most versatile item of clothing I own. Hunted in it 20 + days this past year and even when it got wet (as so many waterfowl hunts end up) it kept me warm! Great as a mid layer or an outer layer into mid season.

Super Versatile Layer 4/4/2019

This hoody is awesome to wear next to skin and over base tees and other layers. I really like using this shirt as my go to base when I fishing in cool weather here in Michigan. I do a lot of hiking to get to the rivers I fish and this layer has held up great and provided a great combo of warmth and breathability.

Great shirt but hood is a little large 3/29/2019

I am 5'11" 195lbs and I ordered a medium. I was worried that this would be a problem and that I would have to exchange it, but to my surprise the shirt fits great and is super comfortable. I love merino wool. Especially this stretchy wool. My only complaint is that the hood is not form fitting to me. It is more like a sweatshirt fit. This isn't really a problem just my observation. It very well could be my pea head just doesn't fill the hood. Overall a great product.

Perfect base layer! 3/24/2019

I recently wore this while Steelhead fishing in the O.P. of Washington state. The morning started at 35 degrees and I wore this under the Klamath while staying perfectly warm. By noon it was 75 degrees and I went to wearing just the Kiln hoody. I didn't even need to roll my sleeves up because it breathed so well! Highly recommended versatile base layer or standalone layer.

Excellent 3/22/2019

I am a non traditional Alabama hunter. I stalk hunt through the flooded timber/swamp land along the Tombigbee River. I purchased this item as my main layer for turkey season and a mid layer for deer season. So far through turkey season this item has been great. I've been rough on this hoody constantly going through briar patches and it gets caught often and has a few snags in the material, but it has held up well. No holes and nothing coming undone yet.

How it fits
Fit great for my size. Athletic fit. Hugs the arms and chest, but isn't too tight or restrictive.

my favorite piece, but needs refinement on material 3/8/2019

This really is my favorite (and I think most people's) piece by First Lite and an improvement on the Chama hoody. A perfect weight second layer or outer layer. I use mine spot and stalk hunting, upland hunting, and just wearing around. The stretching out problems that the Chama had were fixed nicely with the kiln, but the durability compared to other similar weight wool tops like Icebreaker is no comparison. I've already got a couple holes in my Kiln and it has seen less use than some of my older Icebreaker pieces. That aside, I still won't hesitate to buy another one when my current hoody turns to rags

Fantastic do all piece of clothing. 1/2/2019

This was my first Firstlite product, and it is one of my favorite and most used pieces of outdoor clothing. It is amazingly comfortable and the large was sized perfectly as a base layer and light outer layer. I use it as an outer layer early in the season and as a base layer when the temperatures begin drop. Additionally, fusion camouflage is fantastic in northern Wisconsin, where I do most of my hunting, and will make you disappear. I would reccomend this piece of clothing to anybody.

When I read the word Kiln I thought it would be heavier. Great base layer but even in early October in upstate NY I'm wearing some stuff over it so there isn't a real need for the hood. If I were to order again I would have ordered the crew.

Must Have!! 12/27/2018

Initially picked this up as an outer layer for a sept elk hunt, but I ended up wearing it all through sept, oct and into nov. I wore it for whitetails, elk, moose and mule deer. This shirt does an excellent job regulating body temperature, the hood is amazing for those cold mornings when a toque is too much and a hat is too little. This hoody should be a staple in everyone's system.

How it fits
I initially picked up a large based on measurements and a couple recommendations; but after it arrived I had to send it back as a large was way to baggy. After my medium arrived the fit was perfect, the sleeve length is a little long when you aren't using the thumb holes otherwise they do bunch a little but that doesn't take away from the comfort.

Excellent fit and concept, material needs some development 12/17/2018

As I said in my review of the 150 weight hoodie, the Icebreaker and Ibex products of the early-to-mid 2000's will forever be the gold standard in quality and durability in merino. While, after 10 years, my old Icebreaker pieces may develop a hole or two under pack straps or at other high-wear areas, they NEVER pull individual threads or stitching when they come into contact with slightly abrasive material like a tree stem. A lodgepole stem, however, will hook this material like Velcro, and pull threads out and cause running. The stitching between panels is also prone to fraying.

That said, it isn't as delicate as the 150 material, and I didn't destroy this hoodie this year to the extent that I destroyed the 150 hoodie. While I believe the weave and composition of this material needs development, it is quite good.

The design and functionality of this hoodie is spectacular. I love the fit and thumb loops (though thumb loop area could use slight reinforcement at key spots); I use the chest pocket regularly; and the full-coverage hood is great for both warmth and sun/wind protection. The zipper makes it easy to get on/off over a hat and sunglasses. This hoodie is basically too heavy for me for western MT elk until typical end of bow/beginning of rifle weather most years. When I'm hunting mid-to-late season in steep, it's too heavy for the hike up in the AM, but once I get to the top, I switch out my sweated-out baselayer for this, and I wear it all day alone or under a hardshell depending on weather.

I find that this material has a slight odd odor in comparison to Icebreaker. It isn't bad, though, and it does repel BO generally the way merino is supposed to. Even if I sweat into it, I only wash this thing about every 5-7 full days I wear it in the woods (and of course only hang-dry it), and it never starts to smell badly of BO. Overall very good, and would recommend, but hope FL continues to develop the merino weave and stitching. The title of "Best Merino in the Hunting Game" is up for the taking.

How it fits
I was surprised, at 5'10", 155, athletic, that the medium was too large. Exchanged for the Small and it fits exactly the way I like; not quite all the way snug even with a heavier weight merino T under.

Love this item 12/4/2018

Extremely comfortable, durable and warm. I spend a lot of time outdoors with both my job and personal life and so far its holding up pretty well. I get snagged on blackberries and smilax all the time and it doesn't seem to affect the material too much. also, having a shaved head make the hood really useful. It doesn't constrict head movement when I have it up so I can be warm and move how I need to.

I ordered 2 of these pieces and really like the quality- Everything about them is awesome. My only complaint is these run large. This will be in my pack for every hunt moving forward. It is extremely comfortable and the lower chest zipper allows for great ventilation when needed. Can't wait to bring this out on the next hunt later this winter.

If you can only afford one piece, this is it. 11/26/2018

This is by far my favorite piece of hunting gear I own. I hunted in Colorado for elk, for a total of 24 days btw scouting, archery and 2nd rifle. I wore it every day. I am on here right now to purchase another one. Not because anything is wrong with it, but because I have to wash it every now and then and don’t want to be without it. If you can only get one piece of first lite, this is the one. Just this weekend I used it while cutting fire wood. I take it everywhere. The hood is perfect, you can go over the ears or behind them. The Cat's Meow! 11/15/2018

I've found this to be one of the most comfy pieces of kit I have in my hunting gear. Great as an early fall outer for stand hunting in Southern Ontario. It has kept me warm throughout the season either as an outer or layering. The hood fits over a beanie and doesn't obstruct my peripheral vision. It's also light enough that when the hood is on it doesn't prevent me from still hearing any movement in the woods.

A must have 11/14/2018

Paired this with a 150 weight crew top and was able to keep warm in 10 degrees or less at times. It should be noted I was hiking and exerting quite a bit of energy to stay warm. Once I stopped I would throw on my uncompaghre puffy and that's all I needed for my style of hunting. I also wore this over a tshirt in 75 degree weather archery hunting. It was a but warm but breathed very well.

How it fits
The fit was a bit tight. I'm 6'4" about 210 pounds and a large fits well but I think they run on more of a compression fit then loose fit. Still very comfortable.

My go to piece 11/14/2018

No matter what time of year or what the temperature is, I will always have this piece close. From early season hunts using it as an outerlayer over a base layer all the way too the late hunts using it as a mid layer. This by far has been the layer I have used the most. During long glassing sessions in AZ October coues deer hunts it can get hot and the sun is intense. I really like having the hood to protect my neck and ears from the sun. This is an extremely versatile layer and I would recommend it to anyone regardless of the conditions they hunt in.

How it fits
First Lite is the best fitting hunting apparel I have used. I am 6'2 with long arms and broad shoulders. I had a hard time finding gear that would fit me right. I should wear a large but nothing was long enough and I would have to go up to XL or XXL to get long enough sleeves but the mid section would be super baggy. First Lite is a perfect fit for me, I finally have sleeves that actually go to my wrist. I wear Large in all tops/jackets and medium tall in pants. Absolutely love the fit!

Very high quality product 11/14/2018

I ordered the 250 quarter zip and the 250 hoody after seeing them in use in Meat Eater season 7 and with the distinct need for more mid layer clothing as the temperatures in Alberta dropped rapidly this year. After shopping at the local hunting stores, I was not happy with any of the brands they carried for their price, apparent durability and layering uses.
Having had these for the last few weeks and for the last week of hunting season, I am very happy with their thickness, apparent durability (they haven't been shown the thick woods just yet), and construction. The material feels excellent and their "in-hand" appeal is that they actually feel like they're worth the price.

How it fits
I would say that they fit a bit large.
I am about 5'11", 180-185lbs, with dress shirt measurements of a 41" chest, 33" sleeve and 16" neck and the sleeves on these will go well past the tips of my fingers, there is quite a lot of material around the body (good for layering but not so good for casual wear), and they're quite long (will cover most of the seat of my pants).
If I were to order these again for casual wear, I would order a medium - but for hunting I and their intended mid-layer use, they're about right.

Favorite gear 11/8/2018

The hoodie quickly became my favorite piece of hunting gear. I wear it archery, upland, fishing, duck hunting. Its a critical warmth mid layer. Got it a bit damp from wet leaves and grass wearing on the long hike in but it stayed warm throughout the day under my outer layer. Worn over a dozen times without washing and smells like wool. Thinking I can probably wear as an outer layer on a warm early season day. I like having the hood to use if a chill comes - provides enough warmth without limiting hearing/vision of a heavier jacket's hood.

How it fits
Just a bit big in the torso for me (slim/athletic) but works great with Wick crew underneath. Plenty of length in torso and sleeves.

Favorite FL product 10/29/2018

Needed a mid-weight layer and this fit the bill. Temps started in the low 20s and rose to mid 50s so I needed a versatile piece and this worked well over a Merino tee. Was able to hike up some pretty steep terrain and not overheat and then sit without getting cold. Love the hood and big chest zipper pocket to slide glasses easily in and out of. Bought the XL because I felt the L would be too tight and was very happy with the sizing. With the temps in the 20s was able to layer this nicely. Being able to pull the hood up gave the back of my neck and head some needed protection from the wind. This is my favorite First Lite product, not so much on a couple of other items.

versatile layer 10/25/2018

Very versatile piece of layering, I have worn it by itself in early october in NY, as a base and mid layer in mid-late october, and plan on wearing it as a base/mid layer throughout the rest of the season. I'm a big fan of the hood, can put it on under my hat or beanie when I need the extra warmth or leave it off (hood material is thin enough to not get bunched up behind my neck if I choose not to put it on my head). This is one of the first pieces of first lite gear I have ordered and I'm really happy with it. Pairs well with the catalyst jacket for early season brisk mornings.

How it fits
I feel Im a pretty unique size, I'm 5'6 175 pounds, athletic build. I originally ordered this in a medium and large because I was unsure which would fit me best. The medium fit, but it was fairly tight on me, the large allows me the ability to use this as a base or mid layer while not being too baggy.

Awesome Product 10/24/2018

I've only used this hoody on a 3 day deer hunt in early season archery so far. Temps were down in the mid 60's during the hike in and most of the morning. I was able to cool down very quickly after the hike in and once I sat for a bit, I zipped everything up and was able to stay warm and comfortable. The hood is also a great fit when wearing a hat. Sweat dried up very quickly and after 3 hard days of hunting, smell was never an issue. This will be with me on every hunt.

Defeated Ibex Hunt in The Floridas 10/18/2018

I have used the Kiln Hoodie on two hunts so far this year- am early September elk hunt in NM and an Ibex hunt in the Florida Mountains of Southern New Mexico. The elk hunt was in mostly Ponderosa pines with some pinyon and junipers. The temps ranged from upper the 30’s in the mornings to the low 80’s in the afternoon. This was my first experience with merino wool and I was blown away by this hoodie’s ability to regulate my body temp in such a wide temperature range. It was a little warm for the 80’s while hoofing it up steep canyon walls, but anything would be. I also used the Wick on that hunt and loved it.

On my Ibex hunt the material’s durability was put to the ultimate test. Those are about the meanest mountains you could ever hunt in and everything bites, stings, or sticks you. My Kiln hoodie doesn’t have a single snag in it, and THAT is amazing.

Take away points are:

1. It keeps you comfortable in a wide range of temps
2. It’s dang tough for merino wool if it can survive the Florida Mountains. (Seriously, look them up).

I highly recommend this super comfortable, tough and versatile piece of clothing to anyone.

One of my favorite layers 10/18/2018

I bought last year when it was called the Chama Hoody. By far one of my favorite First Lite layers. I use it in all seasons except summer. Mostly hunt in the fall for whitetail deer and waterfowl. The hood just seems to fit right and allows for movement without it shifting around when turning your head. Stay away from burrs if you decide to wear as an early season outer layer. You will not be disappointed with this product.

How it fits
Its seems to run a little big but this is typical of most First Lite gear. I prefer a loose fit over athletic so it works good for me. Order the medium If you want a tighter fit.

Super versatile layer 10/18/2018

Conditions: 7 day rifle October elk hunt, lots of glassing and lots of up and down miles each day.

For me a couple things stood out about this hoody.

One, the thumb-hole design on the sleeves. It's amazing how much more warmth I was able to keep in with just that little extra bit of cloth over my wrists/palm. Also, on the occasion when I needed to catch my balance shimmying over deadfall, the little bit of extra padding on my hands was a nice bonus.
Two, the hood itself is well designed to be tight to the head. When I first put it on I wasn't sure that I liked it, but the hunt showed me how valuable having a hood to contain heat but not obscure my vision or hearing could be.

How it fits
I'm a slim guy at 5'10 and the Medium size fit me perfectly, snug but not so tight I couldn't wear a wicking layer underneath for the cold morning and evening sits. When the temps dipped into the teens at night I slept in the Hoody and never felt constricted. It allowed me a full range of motion, up to and including shouldering a rifle with a fully loaded pack.

Excellent second layer. 10/10/2018

This was in my bag at all times during my recent Colorado Elk hunt. When the wind picked up, I tossed it on and put the hood up. Nice and warm but not bulky. Again, I appreciate the addition of the thumbholes in the cuffs.

Nothing short of great! 10/9/2018

I recently used the Kiln Hoody to scout for late season Elk in the Eagle Caps in Oregon. Although the onsite of weather hasn't hit full force, it was still a little brisk at night.

The Kiln Hoody felt great and at times made me a little too warm, so I had to go down to my base layer, which was the First Lite Aerowool long sleeve.

This is an item that I will definitely utilize year round. Can't wait to try the rest of my First Lite gear (Softshell Pant, Uncompaghre Jacket, and Gaiters).

Great medium weight top! 10/8/2018

I use this as a primary top for archery hunting. I sometimes wear it stand alone and sometimes layer with additional base garments depending on weather conditions. It fits great and is extremely quiet. I has a tendency to get hung up in greenbriar but so far has been very durable. Great pattern and great top!

How it fits
I ordered a large so that I could layer underneath. I have a medium wick hoody that fits more like a t-shirt that I will wear underneath this hoodie. Sleeve length is great and the thumbhole loops are awesome with or without gloves. Length is also good.

Great kit piece, beware of sizing. 9/23/2018

Used this layer frequently this past elk season in Southern Oregon. Great versatility, whether running as a second layer over a Llano/Wilkin or just by itself. Very nice piece to sit still in, whether glassing or sleeping under my quilt. Docked a star because I have issues with the fit but mileage will vary by individual. It should be noted the material is very stretchy and you don't really need to size up compared to your t-shirt size for any reason.

How it fits
It was suggested by First Lite that I order a large; I have medium Llanos and Wilkins and Chamas and liked the fit; I was assured the new Kiln was much more of a performance fit and at my height I would like Large. The large runs...a bit large, at least for me. I'm 6'2" and on the thin side but the shirt ended up being pretty baggy; it's more of a "regular" cut in this size on me, I need a medium for an "athletic" cut. For my purpose it's ok since I often ran it over another layer, but I'm not happy as running it as a base layer underneath a fleece or soft shell; just too much material. I should have ordered a medium given that most of the First Lite items I own are that size.

Best Merino top I have ever used 9/22/2018

One of my friend had this in our camp for archery elk this year. The area we were in had temps that started in the low 30s and colder and could climb to the 80s. I wore this under a puffy for the early mornings and when the winds were fairly high. While I was going around with my pack on, this top kept me warm and dry. In the sun it kept me cool and dry as well. I may also delay my returning of it to my friend.... HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Great piece for September elk 9/20/2018

I really like this piece of gear for cool mornings in colorado high country. Worn over my wick shirt it was sufficient in 40s with a little bit of movement. Sitting still or around camp I would add a vest. I wore it most mornings and evenings for 5 days with a fair amount of sweat in it. My wife for smell at the end rated it a 3 on a scale of 10 with 10 being "burn it." That's pretty impressive.

How it fits
I can go either M or L on first lite tops which can be frustrating. I have the large and like it fine. Most hoodies I would go large. This is a little on the big side for me but I'm keeping it. If i ordered it again I may try medium.

Fall Perfection 9/18/2018

This was a great piece to add to my lineup of gear from first lite. It’s perfect for those fall days that start out chilly but warm up still. When it’s too cold for the thin tops but not warm enough to start needing to layer up this is the perfect piece. Temperatures went from 30 degrees Fahrenheit in the am to mid 60’s for the day and this piece was perfect all day long.

Perfect addition to my layering system 9/14/2018

I recently used this for a 6 day western mountain hunt in Idaho. I loved how this piece was perfect over the 150 aerowool when the weather temps were in the 40-50s, Not only did I use this for hiking through the mountains, but on sets where I posted up for 30 minutes in those same temps, it kept me warmer than expected. It's also worth mentioning the hood is worth the extra dollars for that exact situation. I'm usually cold-natured, so I was more than impressed that I didn't' need to add a extra layer to stay warm during those short sits. I wore this piece 4 of the 6 days, and I didn't have any issues of it smelling from sweat. I look forward to using this for my mid-season whitetail hunts in NC/SC this year.

Perfect layer for September and October 9/8/2018

I was skeptical at first of ordering the kiln hoody, but after using it for a good month now, I have to say it is the most versatile piece of clothing in my kit. It can be used as a second layer early in the morning on those late August early September hunts or as a single layer from mid September till I'm guessing Mid-October, depending on where I take it. The material is super soft and comfortable without any itching which makes it perfect. The extra pocket on the chest is going to be super useful for a rangefinder or something else, and the hood is perfect to either keep the sun off or keep your ears warm. Super impressed with the product, will probably be buying another one in Cipher if not a few in the solid colors as well.

How it fits
With my previous Llano being so large and unable to return to the same shape, I was worried. However, it fits perfectly to me now. Still a little long in the sleeves but it is a very small amount. Has returned to the original shape after multiple uses and washes.

Comfy and Versatile 9/4/2018

Really like the material and weight of the Kiln hoody. Materials is soft, stretchy, and very breathable. Results in a comfortable and versatile layer. Long, slim fit sleeves are convenient for layering and avoiding loose material getting in the way of other gear. Strongly recommended. As always, I like the fusion pattern, now wanting a solid color for casual wear.

How it fits
Initially ordered a size L of this garment based on the sizing guide and my dimensions, but exchanged for a size M and very happy with the smaller size- less extra fabric in the way when layering and the amount of stretch in the material allows great range of motion with the smaller size.

Great Early Season Layer 9/4/2018

I hate having bulky laying systems that inhibit moment so I was extremely happy with the way this product performed for me. Ton of stretch in the material allowed me to move as I pleased without pulling on any material. I used this in the early morning and late evening as the temp started to drop over top of my 150g base layer. Kept me plenty warm and still had breathability to wick any moisture build up. The hoody fits perfectly over a hat so that you don't remove any visibility or range of motion.

Extremely Versatile! 8/31/2018

I wore this in North Dakota last week during the early goose season, and it was outstanding! It was windy in the morning with lows in the upper 40's to low 50's, but was going to warm up during the day, and I was able to use this all day. Kept me warm, then cool, and I didn't have to keep changing or taking layers off. Other guys were surprised how cool it was with the wind and wished they had dressed warmer. Not me! I was able to be comfortable all day with the same clothes fro the morning. Definitely recommend!

Great mid weight layer or early season standalone 8/31/2018

High quality gear is a must after experiencing failures in the past regarding subpar materials and craftsmanship, right out of the box it was evident this was top notch. The material was soft and supple with plenty of stretch, time will tell how It holds up after repeated wear and washes but all indications point to maintaining its shape.

I'm always hesitant to buy items without first trying them on because I'm particular about the way they fit but I had heard good things about First Lite and wanted to give it a try. I'm not one who usually provides reviews but I found them the determining factor on what size to buy and whether it was worth taking the risk .

I'm 6' 2", about 210 lbs with an athletic form, sleeves are usually too short and torsos are usually too wide and bulky...this thing fit like a glove. The sleeves come to mid hand and don't ride up at full bow draw, the body is still loose as a 2nd layer and leaves very little extra material to bunch up under additional layers. The hood fits well alone or with a hat, it shelter the wind but wont hinder your line of sight.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a mid weight layer or comfortable long sleeve when short sleeves just isn't enough.

Perfect Design 8/30/2018

Although I do not own this particular garment I have its predecessor the "Chama Hoody". What an amazing product it is; perfect to wear as a base or second layer in the cold Canadian hunts but also a solid outer layer during early fall and spring hunts. The best feature, aside from the beautiful pattern and quick drying merino wool is the fitted hood. Wearing it with a baseball cap eliminates the need for a toque/beanie and sleeping with it zipped up makes for a very comfortable, warm sleep. Great Hoody 8/30/2018

I will be taking this into the field soon. Maybe this weekend if the weather is not too warm. It is going to be one of my go to tops this season for sure. I am sure I am going to use this as my base layer shirt when the weather gets cold. it is light weight and perfect for cool mornings, but I think it will be most useful as a base layer as the temp drops.

How it fits
I got a large because that is the size t-shirt I wear, and that is what the sizing chart pointed me at. However, I think I should have gotten the medium. Bought the Chama Hoody in 2017 which was succeeded by the Kiln 8/29/2018

The Chama hoody is a fine piece to layer with or use by itself. I'm usually more inclined to switching a lighter-weight shirt out for this piece because anything in addition to this (especially if you wear outerwear over this), you're going to warm up in a hurry. Another reason I switch layers is that it's not as comfortable having two long-sleeves pulling against each other under a coat.

How it fits
The Chama Hoody tended to pull the entire shirt up when you wore the hood. In my opinion, the cut was poorly designed because it was as if you had no neck. If I had gigantic trapezius', it'd fit great but because I have a neck, this has been particularly annoying. It basically rendered the hood useless when wearing a pack because the hood pulls down hard against my head.

The go to! 8/29/2018

My new favorite. The addition of spandex and the longer cut turned the great Chama into the perfect wool top. This thing is always in my pack or on my back no matter what hunt I'm on. Just buy it, you wont be sorry.

Great Quality, Larger than expected 8/29/2018

I've been wanting to switch from Sitka to First lite for a while now and finally made the jump this year. I purchased the Klin Hoody, medium along with a couple other items. I only have first impressions for a review, but will get some real world app this next week! Very good quality and feel. I can also tell this is a piece i will wear well into the late season. I will say all the reviews i read said it fit near perfect, for me, it was a little on the large side which kind of surprised me. Not enough that i would change it, just more so than i was expecting. Either way looking forward to getting more.

How it fits
Fit athletic, but more on the larger side.

Very comfortable 8/29/2018

Short version: very comfortable, stretchy and just loose enough that a snug fitting base layer can go under it.
Long version: Took this out on an Elk scout in the Canadian Rocky Mountains last week getting ready for opening day of Bow Season. First impressions it fits really well and was very comfortable for all day hiking. I’m 5’11” 190lbs (a bit stocky, shoulders measure 45” around and chest is 42”, the Large fit really well). Hiked two ridges and kept moving all day without sweating (weather was about 10 degrees Celsius) had a bit of light rain and lots of dew covered brush. It did soak up some of the moisture (it is bare merino wool after all) but it dried fast. I wore just the kiln hoody with no layer under it and put the Catalyst soft shell over it when I wasn’t moving and needed a bit more protection from wind (easily could put another layer under the hoody as well, and not feel restricted. If you run a looser fitting base layer, and you have a stocky build, you might want to go up a size but it wouldn’t be critical. Stayed warm and dry for the most part with just the hoody (got a bit warm when really pushing to the summit, but that’s to be expected with the warm-ish temp). I can see this hoody coming with me on just about every hunt.

How it fits
Just loose enough to fit a layer under it, yet it is thin and stretchy so it doesn’t feel bulky under a jacket.

Great First Impression 8/29/2018

I just received my Kiln hoody and so far it looks to be an awesome piece of gear. the fit is a little big in the torso for me (5'10" 190lbs) but that should work well for layering underneath. if i wanted this as a next to skin layer i would drop a size. I can't wait to try this hoody out when the temps start dropping.

How it fits
A little loose in the body but the length of the body, the hood, and the sleeve length are all spot on.

Great product, first experience with merino 8/29/2018

First experience with the FL merino base layers. Impressed with the comfort, odor control, and breathability while hiking. I've always used synthetic mountaineering gear in the past and this stuff breathes just as well, provides the same amount of warmth relative to weight and has superior odor control. I tend to run cold when not hiking so this is a good base for me in the early fall high-country with days in the 70s and nights in the 30s-40s.

How it fits
I wouldn't plan on getting much more than a light layer underneath this.

My go to piece 8/29/2018

This light weight, thin top has become my go to piece for every hunt and fishing trip. It fits just right and I love the thumb holes. The hood fits snug and moves with my head, allowing me to be able to turn and see and not have it get in my way. Its warmth is perfect for those in between temps when its a bit too cold for just a shirt, but too warm for the puffy jacket. Both of these items were great on my mule deer hunt. Still hunted and hiked 13 miles the first day and these two pieces did fantastic in central Arizona. Excellent 8/29/2018

I was freaked out. My dog chewed up my Chalma hoody a month before Elk season. I asked my wife she could sew it up. She looked it over and said the material and the craftmanship that went into making this is beyond anything she could do. So I needed to replace it. Honestly, I looked around at every hunting clothing supplier and there was nothing even close but all were priced about the same. So I bought my new Kiln and it's even better. Feels more sturdy and toasty warm. I love it.

You Need One 8/29/2018

This was my first piece of First Lite gear, but definitely not my last. After reading all the good reviews I decided to take the plunge and am completely satisfied. I’ve worn it in the TN heat and somehow stated cool(or at least as cool as you can in TN) and have tried it with my layering system and it’s perfect. Since this I’ve added obsidians, the puffy vest and am about to order the catalyst jacket. I feel prepared for my November mule deer hunt in MT.

I have recommended this product to multiple hunting friends and family members as a must have in the gear arsenal!

Love the quarter zip for afternoon and hiking to vent extra heat. I got the fusion and was concerned it was going to be to light in color based on the photos but it’s a nice tan base color. I think I'll keep it 8/29/2018

Ordered the kiln based on the reviews after falling in love with the aerowool items from FL. It is super comfy but does have a bit more give than I like for multiple day hunts. I ordered the solid black bc I kept finding myself wishing I had something other than camo on week long hunts where I'm staying in or close to a town, but with the same moisture and odor control to wear every night. This is going to be perfect for those times and just as a casual piece, but I don't think I would take it on a backpack hunt where I tend to lose 5-10 lbs really fast and need my layers to hold tight.

How it fits
I am 5'10" and run anywhere from 190 in the summer to 175 during the fall so sizing is always tough for me. I went with the medium on this and am happy with the fit, but I like my hunting clothing tighter than most. #extramedium

I bought this a few seasons ago and i've been using it my entire blacktail season. I live in California so it doesnt get too cold over here, this thing is great. Also the merino dries real quick so it's awesome. My only gripe with this hoodie is the hood/neck area gets a bit tight when you zip it up all the way. I'm 5'9 and pretty lean. How it fits
I was concerned about the size and almost ordered a medium after reading some threads about First Lite sizing, but I went ahead and got the large. I definitely made the right choice. The sleeves are a little tight on my upper arms but not too tight, and the length of the sleeves is perfect. I wear a medium in the uncompahgre for reference

From the quarter zip to let a little heat out, the thumb holes to keep your sleeves in place when you add the next layer to the hood that helps keep your bino strap from rubbing your neck, this piece is designed well. A fantastic piece 8/29/2018

I got this hoody as a do it all baselayer/outer layer. The purpose was to use it as a base layer for my upland hunting in MT where camo isn't a necessity but also use it for turkey hunting in the spring. It has performed incredibly well so far. I love merino because it keeps me warm when it gets wet and I found myself in a rainstorm where the temps dropped to 42 but I was ok. The fit is tighter but is great because the arms are longer for layering. I am an athletic person with long arms who usually has to go up to a Large but then has room around the belly. This is perfect.

Great fitting product 8/29/2018

I haven’t tried this out on a hunt yet but the fit and feel of the product is great! This is exactly the quality that is expected when associated with first lite. Can’t wait to use it in on a hunt this season.

Replaced my Chama 8/29/2018

My Chama hoodie was by far my favorite Firstlite piece for over a year. As it was kinda known for being a little baggy, I was excited to seen the Kiln hoodie be a better cut. And it truly is. It holds it shape bunch better and stays tight through the sleeves even when you roll or scrunch them up. Just got back from 4 days while deer hunting in Arizona and so far, it’s holding its shape perfectly. Well done Firstlite.

Ummm... Dope AF. 8/29/2018

The Kiln Hoody is so freaking sweet. This is my first piece from First Lite and now I want it all. I used this on the opener here in Utah and wore it every day in the heat to keep the sun, ants, bees, and flies off of me. It kept me cool enough I never wanted to take it off. I would highly recommend this.

Amazing fit and all day comfort 8/28/2018

Love this hoody for early season archery. Light weight and breathable yet heavy enough for those early morning sits and late evening walk in the dark back to camp. I used this for Archery opener Bear hunt with my 9 month old daughter on my back for her first hunting experience. Walked 5 miles round trip never once got to hot or cold with the kiln hoody.

Looking forward to building my setup with more gear soon!

How it fits
Fit was perfect, I'm 6'1" and 200 lbs and often times can't find gear that is long enough in the arms as well as long enough for my torso. This did both. Stretches enough to fit over a layer if needed and close enough to skin to fit comfortable under and outer jacket or vest.

Awesome piece of kit 8/28/2018

I previously owned a Chama hoodie and liked it but found it a bit baggy after using it for a time. The Kiln has fixed those small issues and and the fit is much improved. The Kiln is by far my most used piece of kit.The heavier weight merino has been great for fishing, hiking and kayaking and Im sure it will serve me well now that deer season is upon us. Couldn't recommend this thing more. Id even buy two but Im pretty sure its going to stand up to years of abuse.

How it fits
If you have a regular build then fits very true to size, slightly bigger than something like Arcteryx or OR but the sizing is more functional for its purpose, ie doesn't ride up when bending over.

I'm upgrading my gear and this stuff is awesome 8/28/2018

I bought this along with klamath quarter zip and also corrugate guide jacket for a layering system. I don't forsee many weather scenarios where this will not be adequate, except for sub zero temps, perhaps. These are my first purchases from firstlite and you can really tell the quality compared to a lot of my older clothing that came from big box sportsman stores. As far as the kiln hoody, this thing is a go to. Next to skin is so comfortable. I don't have a lot of field testing with this stuff but I wanted to throw a review out to be entered for the $500 gift card!

Favorite Piece of FL Gear 8/28/2018

One of my favorite pieces of first lite gear. The material is heavy but breathes if that makes sense. It just feels good to wear. I got the hooded version and absolutely love it. The hood lays flat on the back when not in use and does not get in the way when in use. The hood moves with your head just as intended. If I had to pick one piece of First Lite gear for any hunt, this would probably be it.

Mvp of sheep country 8/28/2018

I bought this for a sheep hunt earlier this month. It took the cake in the clothes department of the hunt. It was breathable lightweight and strong on all the long hikes through nasty underbrush. Then on the ridge tops it was warm even when wet and windy. I really liked the hoody part because I didnt have to pack a seperate stocking cap. I could just pull it up if I got cold or put it down and forget about it. I had limited weight and this shirt helped cut back on that and cut back on amount of clothes. It was my main workhorse that I always wore. Highly recommend

I purchased this item for its versatility and versatile it is. This is truly a great piece of gear for anyone, anywhere.

How it fits
I’m usually in between a Medium and and Large due to having broader shoulders. Normally I have to chose between gear fitting in the shoulders with extra cloth throughout or having a very snug fit in the shoulders and a proper fit in the torso.

Wore this on a SE AK alpine hunt. Kept me warm when I was on top of the ridge during the day and evening. Kept me warm at night.

Outstanding versitle piece! 8/4/2018

The Chama was a great piece to have in the kit. This new kiln tips that. The new fit and merino-x is great. It holds shape so much better than the Chama did. It also has a little longer of a tail on it so it doesn’t ride up your back as much when bending over or with a pack on. I wore the Chama as an outer layer with a base under it during the earlier season and as a mid layer under a fleece and a jacket when temps started to drop. I plan to do the same as season gets underway here in 2018

Favorite Piece of First Lite Gear 7/29/2018

Being new to First Lite in this last year I am slowly getting my kit together. I see the kiln hoody as a must have for anyone.

I am 5'11" 200 lbs and the large fits me great. The sleeves are slightly long, but just slightly and I really don't notice that at all. Is fitted in chest and shoulders and leaves plenty room for mobility and I could use this as a second layer or First layer.

So comfortable... 7/16/2018

The Men's Kiln Hoody is very soft, comfortable and breathable. It has a nice stretch to it and allows full motion without any restrictions. It's a very well made product and will definitely be my new go to piece for spot and stalk.

How it fits
Just a heads up: The XL was too large for me. I typically order XL for the majority of products that I've purchased for hunting, but I did recently lose around 30 lbs. (currently at 197 lbs.) so that could be a factor. However, the arm length was a lot longer than any other piece that I have as well as the length of the body of the Hoody. I'm in the process of doing a return for the Large to give it a try.

The Benchmark in Quality Tech Clothing for the Outdoors 7/13/2018

I am writing one review for the three items I purchased a few days ago. I received the shirts yesterday. I have purchased First Lite products before. They all performed very well. This time I purchased the Kiln Merino Hoodie, Klamath Hoodie and Merino Furnace Half Zip shirt. First Lite (FL) did something to the fitting. These fit great. These shirts are not baggy like the Chama shirts I have. I got a lot of use with the Chama's, but they were baggy. I really like each one of these shirts. They are equally superior outdoor garments that will keep you warm and dry. I purchased all three in the black color. That way I can use them for hunting, fishing, hiking, casual wear and work. I tend to go with the solid colors, however I have several in FL in their camo patterns. I am certain you will be extremely pleased with the Kiln, Klamath or Furnace garments.

How it fits
For size comparison, I am 6',4", 225-230#, 40" waist and 37" sleeve length. Size XXL fits me perfectly in every area. Like I said, FL did something great with the fit and sizing.

Soft Merino 7/10/2018

This is by far the softest, most comfortable Merino wool on the market. I really enjoy how the material feels and the fit. I also like the functionality of the zipper and the front pocket. I plan on wearing this while backcountry hunting in Idaho this year, but also for tree stand hunting here in Texas. It seems suitable for both scenarios because of how breathable the material is and how well it absorbs moisture. First Lite makes some great gear that at first seems overpriced, but once you wear it in the field, you realize why it cost what it does.

I received this hoody the other day and all I can say is it fits great and feels like it will breathe awesome. This may have just become my go to hoody for hunting in all climates.

Best got Better 7/3/2018

Loved my Chama Hoody but this thing is like a better fitting, more comfortable version. Unreal.

How it fits
Fits perfectly--no longer boxy like the Chama was.
