A solid item to add to your arsenal 3/14/2019

I already had a nice base layer top/bottom along with a pair of Obsidians and a LS so I was looking for a versatile mid layer. I tree stand hunt in MN, spot and stock in SD and bird hunt. I wanted something I could wear no matter what I was doing. The Klamath is incredibly comfortable and the hood/facemask is legit. I first ordered an XL and it was huge so I went down to a Large (based on FL measurements). I debated even going to a Medium because of all the reviews that say it's athletic in fit. For me it comes down to this: do you want a mid layer or do you want dual purpose as an outer layer? When the Klamath is my 3rd layer (base, hoodie, Klamath) it's perfectly snug and the sleeves cover all but my fingers, acting as a pseudo glove. It is very warm and comfortable. Now I just need a shell and could dress for everything.

How it fits
Torso and arms are long. It covers my gloves and I usually tuck it in.

Hard charging fleece 3/1/2019

I've been using this hunting small game in the mountains and during training runs. This fleece is the right weight for high intensity activity in cold weather. Ran 8 miles in single digits and it performed great, dried out while running and kept me moving forward.

The hood is big win for me, its form fitting and when zipped to the top it creates a tight seal around your face that does not limit your vision. I could even see myself picking up the non-hooded version just to have another option depending on the weather.

How it fits
The sleeves are too long for my taste, honestly I should have got a medium. The overall length is also long, which will be handy when apart of a laying system, because I like to tuck my fleece into my pants when layering up for the cold.

Grid fleece is a game changer! 2/27/2019

I knew I wouldn't be disappointed when I first put this hoody on. It is very form fitting, so it makes for a must have item in your layering system. The hood is also great for keeping your face out of wind chill. Wouldn't mind another one for every day use!

As Advertised 2/24/2019

Great top, hood rotates without restriction as I’m stretching around the tree stand looking for whatever made that last noise. It goes on smoothly over other layers without binding. Material is soft and comfortable, very warm. During the rut I wore the 250 gram base merino top, with the Klamath over it and the uncompahgre vest as an outer layer in the stand. Kept me very comfortable in mid 30’s and up in the stand with great mobility to draw a bow. Really love the product.

A definite go to top 12/27/2018

This is definitely one of my favourite pieces and a go to top. I was looking for something that's thick and warm enough to provide an excellent outer layer while being light enough that I would wear it as a mid layer while sitting for Whitetails in late nov in the Edmonton Bowzone.

This shirt filled that requirement flawlessly, I wore this as an outer when the temps dropped below zero (celcius) while trying to spot and stalk bull moose. I would recommend that everyone has this in their closet, I'm on the fence about getting a second in the 1/4 zip as I am not a fan of too many hoods.

Missing Thumb holes 12/27/2018

I waited till the end of the season before I wrote any reviews. This is one of my favorite pieces I have from first lite. It always finds it way into my layering no matter what time of year. My only problem with it is that the sleeves are long. Which would make sense if they added thumb holes like all the other tops but this one doesn't have them. Other then that everything fits great.

Fantastic Mid-Layer 12/23/2018

As my first purchase with First Lite I was very impressed. I went with a large to accommodate layers underneath. I use it to run and hike in the wind and does very well to break the wind. Very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Can't wait to wear next deer season.

How it fits
The hood is form fitting to the face which blocks the wind and keeps the wind from hitting your neck. Very nice fit!

Glad they made this 12/8/2018

Having been a fan of the Patagonia R1 fleece for 20 years I was psyched to see first lite make this piece which is very similar but w/a hood and in camo. I find that the fleece wicks better and the grid is actually warmer than wool. I take this with me for early October hunts when the evening temps get a little cool and I can just throw it on and being a bald guy the hood saves me from having to bring a beanie during the last hour of the day when it gets a little too cool for just the ball hat. I wear this now during the cold late season under my Woodbury jacket, I take the hood off the jacket and use the fleece hoody instead. The only thing they should have added that really would have been nice would have been thumbholes in the sleeves. It will get smelly faster than the merino but I find that its worth it for its wicking ability and it holds up well after several washes

How it fits
The medium fit is perfect and I'm not thin as I like good beer so I have a little belly but I also have some muscle so I'm short and a little stocky.

Awesome top for whitetail hunting! I was extremely happy with the performance of this top. I was able to wear it as a layering piece or as a lighter outer layer for mid/early late season whitetail hunting in Ohio and Indiana. Super comfortable and quiet! The hood is perfect for blocking wind while sitting in the stand and provides cover like a face mask. I highly recommend this top for any hunt!

Fantastic Top 11/26/2018

Great base layer, works in a very wide range of temperatures. Ive been wearing it out around town (probably too much) since its so comfortable-- might need to grab another one for that. The hood fits great, doesn't block vision, and won't slide your had around.

Really dig it.

My only wish is that it had thumb holes, especially since its a tad long in the sleeves.

Perfect Mid-layer 11/18/2018

Grid fleece provides an outstanding feeling of warmth while providing the necessary circulation of air to wick moisture away. Mountain hunters know the real struggle starts after you’ve climbed to a good glassing point. This mid layer can be worn on the hike in and dries within minutes while you sit cozily behind your bino’s. The hood propels the Klamath into the arena of enlightened outdoor products.

Fantastic 11/12/2018

I can’t say enough about this hoody. I find myself wearing it all the time. Raking leaves? Klamath hoody, fishing? Klamath hoody, moose hunting? Klamath hoody....you get the point. It’s Extremely comfortable, very warm and breaths amazing. I wore this for a week straight moose hunting in Newfoundland, the weather was very unforgiving, snow, rain, and 50mph winds. This was my base layer and it performed flawlessly. But the best part is the hood, I wore it up while hunting. it does not impact your field of view whatsoever, it moulds to your head keeping the wind out and you feeling warm all day! I would recommend it to anyone looking for a versatile multi use base layer.

Great Piece of Gear 11/9/2018

This top has become my go to piece for November. Breathes great and dries fast. I can wear it climbing and walking through trees covered in snow. This is my first season with it. Good Piece of Gear 11/8/2018

I really dig this piece of gear. The grid fleece technology does seem to keep my warmer than a conventional fleece warming layer. I really like the cut of the hood. It allows for better view out of peripherals than a standard hood - one of the reasons I never used a standard hood, I always hated the lessened field of view.

One thing I would like to see changed (reason for 4 stars), the sleeves are long enough to have thumb holes, but do not, so they just bunch up in the forearm area. I find this to be mildly annoying. Would love to see the sleeve length shortened slightly, or thumb-holes added so the sleeves can be taught when worn. Would still buy again, but would like to see that change. Even given this issue, this is still a great piece of gear and has helped keep me warm on multiple occasions.

How it fits
I hold pretty steady at 192-195 lbs and the Large is just a tad loose on me with base layers, but not annoyingly so. The medium would be likely be too tight, so I think large is my ticket.

Love it. 10/24/2018

I recently took my new Klamath on a back country sheep hunt in the Alberta Rockies. The hood is great and it eliminated the need to bring a neck gaiter and toque. It covers your face well and the zipper allows for easy venting while hiking. It is a very versatile item for high country hunting.

The only down side I found was the exterior arm stitching does not hold up well when making your way to the high country though the spruce trees. It frays and pulls a bit which occurred right after the first day. But overall the stitching held up.

I would recommend this item, but just go easy on the arms when heading through semi thick bush.

necessary piece 10/11/2018

love the function this. super light weight, dries fast and is tough material. last year i was using a sawtooth jacket, opted to try this this year and was very impressed. pretty sure it's a little lighter weight wise but biggest difference was this felt noticeably warmer than the sawtooth, which surprised me. small downsides are it will get a little funky and start to smell after a few days of sweating in it, no surprise there. the hood is super functional for warmth, glad they make one with a hood but feel the design could be improved. what i mean is, as bowhunter I never felt comfortable anchoring with the zipper full zipped up. not the end of the world. great piece

I figured I'd really like this piece, but I didn't realize just how much I would LOVE IT !!! 10/8/2018

I got this as a mid-layer, and to be honest.... because I liked the looks of it in Fusion!

It arrived the day before my Pronghorn hunt in WY and the weather was looking cold, windy and rainy! I also received a Catalyst soft-shell at the same time (never needed it). When we got to WY it was late at night, and freezing fog. We had to set up our tent at midnight, the wild was howling, and the freezing drizzle was blowing sideways. I was wearing an old Llano base, and my new Klamath hoodie, and that is all! I will not tell you that this Klamath is "wind-proof" because it's not, but I will tell you that in the dark, COLD, freezing drizzle, I never once even considered adding another layer. I was stunned! Stunned to the point that on more than one occasion, I double checked to make sure I only had on the 2 layers, because I couldn't believe that I wasn't freezing! My wife seriously had on 4-5 synthetic layers from a big box store and she was really cold.

I can't say enough about this piece. Obviously everyone's cold tolerance is different, but with a base under this, I really think you are golden down to freezing, if you have something on your head and hands, and you are moving.

Love this so much I just bought another one in Dry Earth for casual wear!

Just what I was looking for 9/28/2018

Just got it in the mail today. I was a little nervous at first when ordering online without being able to try on first. Ended up calling and got a lot of great help on sizing not only on this piece but across the board on all of their items. I am 6'3" and weight 170 lbs and the large fits really well. I have long arms and torso and the sleeves had plenty of length. I would say this piece fits pretty damn close to how the Chama hoody fits. It isn't super thick but it is pretty warm and should work well as a crossover mid layer/outer layer piece.

The R1 of the hunting world 8/30/2018

Finally! One of my most favorite backcountry pieces has been the Patagonia R1 series fleece. Amazong warmth, good weight, and versatile for year round use. The Klamath Hoody is the hunting version! Perfect for early morning glassing and cool afternoon breezes. I love the hood (bald guys unite!) and the long sleeves to keep the draft out between gloves and the cuff. The fit is a little long, but that's alright, keep the backside extra warm. Awesome piece that lives in my pack because of how versatile it can be. My only complaint is the loose mesh in the hood tends to catch on my hat when I take it off.

Excellent Lightweight Midlayer 8/30/2018

The Klamath is a well thought out piece of gear. Semi-fitted to allow layering without bulkiness, thumb holes to conceal some of your hands and prevent bunching when you put on your outer layer, and a hood that doubles as a balaclava when fully zipped. Due to the balaclava-esque nature of the hood, you cannot don the hood with the zipper already zipped, you must unzip the front enough to get the hood over your head first. Likewise for removing the hood. That's not necessarily a negative, just something to consider if you need to be able to manipulate the hood with one hand or like to take the hood on and off frequently but also like things fully zipped. Visibility with the hood on is excellent.

How it fits
The fit is exactly what I would expect for a large. I wouldn't describe the arms as tight, but they are definitely fitted, which will help with drawing a bow, getting on your outer later, and not getting caught on things as you walk by. Better fit than the previous Halstead.

Nice fleece 8/30/2018

The only reason I’m giving this 4 stars is because of how thin it is. Is appears to be very well made, and the fit is perfect on me (5’ 11, 180 lbs, size large).

Being the first Klamath/halstead fleece I’ve laid hands on, I was expecting something a bit thicker after having read all the other reviews for how warm it is. Compared to the military issue grid fleece, this is definitely thinner and I have to add another layer under/over it to achieve the same comfort I’m used to with my old issued one.

Other than that, I love the hood, it’s well made, and I can tell that is is going to be a very durable piece in the layering system.

For years, the Halstead was one of the favorite pieces in my layering system. But, it always seemed to be missing just one little thing, A HOOD! Man, to say I was excited to see that the revised version of the Klamath would have a hood is a vast understatement. It's the perfect outer layer for those cool September mornings chasing a bugle, as well as a great mid layer for that late Mule Deer rut hunt.

My new favorite piece 8/30/2018

I like keeping bulk down in my hunting apparel and utilizing fleece hoodies has been my answer to that. They offer warmth and fairly good wind protection. The Red River valley is like a wind tunnel and 20mph wind is a light breeze on most days, this thing has already proven it's worth on early morning range and scouting sessions. I expect nothing less during hunting season and plan to use it as my mid-outer piece for most the year.

How it fits
I did struggle on fit a bit with this one as it is slightly more athletically cut than other First Lite pieces. I tried the XL and L versions because I don't like bulk, but also don't like feeling restricted. I ended going with L because it was comfortable and XL ended up having too much length in arms and would bunch up.

Perfect Fitting Hoody. Suprisingly warm. 8/30/2018

I was surprised how great this hoody actually fit my body. After talking with a First Lite Staffer, I chose to go a size larger than I thought and get the Large and boy am I happy I did. The sleeves are that perfect length that makes me want to always wear it. I was surprised how warm it kept me in temperatures down to 40 without moving. The hood is great for hunting, but the built in facemask can be a little awkward when unzipped. The chest pocket is great for a diaphragm call. Comfort overall of the material is amazing and it has been durable thus far through buck brush and belly crawling on the prairie. As expected, foxtail and other stickers will stick to this material. I would suggest adding one of these to your kit!

Very versatile 8/30/2018

Great light-mid weather piece. Very comfortable and flexible, perfect mobility in a tree stand. The sleeves are a little long, I’d rather them be a bit shorter so not to bunch-up/interfere with my release while shooting a bow. Otherwise a good fit in the body and shoulders.

How it fits
Sleeves are a bit long. I’d rather have them shorter and tighter to my forearm. Dropping down to a medium would make the rest of the shirt too small.

I love this hoodie! Well constructed and durable. I live on the California coast and it's perfect for those foggy mornings and evenings.

How it fits
I'm 6', 172 lbs, medium frame, athletic build and this fits me perfect. (I ordered a medium) I personally like fitted clothing and this one of them. It has an athletic fit so it doesn't fit loose but not constricting. Arm length and torso are great.

The Perfect Piece! 8/29/2018

What can I say, First Lite knocked it out of the park on this one. I own and am extremely happy with a lot of my FL clothing but this hoody is my favorite! I am a huge hoody fan and this piece has great versatility. I already ordered another I like it so much! I've used this hoody on chilling mornings over a t-shirt or layered it. Couldn't be happier with this one!

Perfect! I cannot say this about a whole lot of FL items for me.

Excellent 8/29/2018

Really like the fleece hoody been searching for something a bit warmer than the chama which is also top notch. The fit is perfect i have a medium and im 5’7” and 165 and I drink beer so I’m not skinny , theres enough room for the chama or other baselayer underneath. The hood is great

EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAY IT IS! 8/29/2018

Perfect early season outer layer for glassing from high alpine ridges. Can't wait to put it through it's paces later this fall. This first thing I do once I reach my lookout is throw it on. No matter the wind or how hard I push up the mountain, I know I'm going to be in the zone when I get there.

FINALLY!!! 8/29/2018

I've been looking for this piece for a long time. As a climber and hiker a lightweight hooded fleece is a staple in my kit. Backcountry hunting in Colorado means you need to conserve weight but also have an insulation piece that works and won't bog you down. This is it. Fit is spot on and way better than the previous generation fleece which was baggy and not really functional. The hood is a must when you're above tree line or need additional warmth. Check any gear list for a rainier climb or Denali trip and you'll see a hooded grid fleece on every list. This is that piece for a hunter. Stretches and breathes but is warm and lightweight. The hood zips up and covers your face which provides additional warmth but stays out of the way when you don't need it. Layers well also and goes over my Wick 150 hoody without feeling baggy or bunched up. This with the Unpronouncable vest keeps me warm while moving down below freezing and then I throw my Unpronouncable hoody when I stop to glass or sit in a stand. Seriously, get this. It's a very versatile piece that will always be in my pack.

How it fits
I'm 5'10" 200lbs athletic with a 44" chest and 34" waist and a large fits great. Not too snug and definitely not as baggy as the previous generation fleece. Sleeves are long which I like but if you're a T-Rex you may get some bunching.

Love this Klamath hoody. I wore it scouting for deer on a evening that was around upper 70s and once i started walking and huffing I thought i was gonna start sweating pretty good but seemed to start to breath fairly well! Runs a wee bit small.... or iam just buff ha... no but seriously good product and seems like the hoody material is really durable

Who could have thought it could be better! 8/29/2018

I've put the Halstead fleece to the test for the past couple years and it is one of my go to pieces! I love it so much I have three one in Fusion, Pine, and Cipher. I couldn't have imagined it being any better....enter the Klamath! Fit is perfect now, just a hair more fitted than the Halstead. The addition of the hoody is great when wearing as an outer layer in the early season or if mobile. I can't wait to really put it to use this fall and then hunting sheds in the spring!

Excellent Product and Customer Service 8/29/2018

This is the perfect product to throw on over a short sleeve or light tee base layer when the climb up the hill is done and the glassing is ready to commence. I had a similar product that had worn out and this not only replaced that, but has the added features of the hood and face shield. Fit well to size. I am 5’-11” (I tell the ladies at the bar 6 feet) and 175 lbs and the medum is form fitting but not too tight which is ideal as I can add another heavier wind blocking layer when needed. I bought mine in Alpine. Last but not least, thanks to the staff at Firstlite for answering my questions and pointing me to this item after only a brief description of my hunting style and location.

How it fits
5’-11.75” 175 lbs. Thinner build with more narrow shoulders. Usually wear 15.5 neck x 32 shirts and 32-30 pants to give an idea of girth. Medium fits perfect.

looks to be warm. love the hood. close athletic cut 8/29/2018

This will be perfect as a next to skin layering piece on a cold day or as a stand alone on a warmer day under a shell. Mobility is excellent. It is not restrictive in any plane of motion that I could contort into. The material is not heavy.

The hood fits my large-ish noggin perfectly and the zipper appears to be garaged in such a way as to not catch my beard.

It's 95 million degrees in Mississippi as I write this so I can't really comment on the warmth it will provide. I can say that I had to take it off after a minute or two trying it on in my kitchen.

How it fits
It is not baggy in the least. I ordered a medium because I have the Chama hoody in that size and have been very happy with it. This piece is quite a bit more snug than the Chama Hoody. Still, I gave it a perfect fit because I think it will be perfect. If you want to wear a layer under it (and you are 5'9" 181lbs), then I'd go with the large.

I agree with the other review that the sleeves are noticeably tight at the wrists.

just what I was looking for 8/29/2018

I have yet to wear in the field but wanted to leave a comment about fit. I ordered this as a do it all top layer. I am 6', 175lbs with a 41" chest and was sorta between sizes. I sized up to a Large and it is perfect for my need, which was lots of options for layering under a single top. It is a little baggy on its own but does not interfere with shooting my bow and it leaves room to layer up under for when it gets cold. Maxed out I can fit a next to skin base layer, thermal quarter zip and either a down vest or thick fleece underneath without feeling like the Michelin man or with any interference with shooting my bow.

Best midlayer there is! 8/29/2018

Grid fleece is excellent as a midlayer, however most are lacking when it comes to wind. First lite claims the Halstead blocks the wind and they are right. On a recent trip the Halstead did an fantastic job blocking the famous winds of Mount Washington, NH, even better than the softshell I had. I've had virtually every high-end technical midlayer on the hunting market and this is far and away the best. Thank you First Lite!

Best fleece hoody available. 8/28/2018

I’ve worn several different fleece hoodies. This one is by far the best. And the main reason is this hoody fails to retain smells with the HeiQ treatment. I wore this hoody every day on a five night boundary waters trip and it still didn’t stink. You will not be disappointed with the purchase of this piece.

Great Peice 8/28/2018

Just got this fleece and really like the fit, I went with a large because I have a large chest, the arms are a little on the long side but nothing to long. I wish that this had thumb loops on it, this would make the sleeve length a perfect fit for me. I had just assumed that there would be thumbs loops as most of these types of layers have them.

How it fits
If you have a larger chest and don't want a skin tight fit jump up a size, the measurements they had listed online for chest are accurate as this is what I used as well as a recommendation from a first lite employee.

Awesome!!! 8/23/2018

I was a Halstead guy as well, own three of them. With the addition of the hood, this is one of my favorite clothing items. Purchased one in Fusion and will soon be buying several more in solid colors!! Couldn't ask for a better layering piece or hoody to wear around.

How it fits
The fit is slightly more athletic, which in my opinion is better. The only downfall to the Halstead was the sleeves near the wrists were loose. The sleeves on the Klamath near the wrist appear to be a tighter fit.

I bought the Klamath as an early season outer layer and late season mid layer for whitetail hunting this season in the Midwest and also as a possible outer layer/ mid layer for an upcoming elk hunt in Colorado. As you can tell, this is going to be a very versatile piece for me and the fit is great.

How it fits
I'm 6'1 and around 210 lbs with a fairly athletic build and the fit is just about perfect for this layer. There is still room to layer underneath but is tight enough with the athletic/shooters cut that it won't be bagging up underneath an outerlayer.

Fits Finally On 7/3/2018

DISCLAIMER: I work at First Lite.

That said, I'd be the first to say that the fit on our old fleece, the Halstead, was way too large and boxey. Seems like we got it right with the Klamath. It fits me perfect in MD as a second layer and is sufficiently long to not ride up while glassing on mountainsides. I also like the addition of the hood and stash pocket.
