My husband has been wearing First Lite for the last year and I decided to try it for myself. I am not disappointed. My usual size of medium fit snug but comfortable though I chose a large to allow for wear as a base layer and a single layer around the house and on errands without being too snug. It is warm without making me sweat and is very soft. The hood fits well and actually covers my head and stays on unlike other hoods. The thumb holes are an added bonus. I highly recommend the Kiln Hoodie.
I bought this hoodie to go mule deer hunting in Idaho. I am normally a size L in shirts and sweats, but I got an XL so I could fit layers under it. When I tried it on.... it fits like an XS. BUT it does stretch out a little and is very warm and soft. It was perfect for those sunny, chilly days to hike around in. I would give it a 5/5 if it didn't fit so small. Love the snug hood though and the thumb holes- great designs.
The kiln hoodie is a bread and butter piece that you can realistically wear year round. The zipper and hood allows for quick temperature regulation in earlier season hunts when the temps and conditions change frequently. I found that it ran smaller than I would personally like. I usually get smalls in everything but I think I would prefer a medium in this.
In the winter I live in wool base layers since I work outside in cold conditions. I've owned merino base layers from all the top brands and I have to say I am very impressed and happy with the First Lite merino base layers I've bought. The material is excellent and the design is great. I love the long sleeves and thumb loops. As for size, the M fits me well, not too tight. I'm very happy I decided to give First Lite a try and will be back for more!
Okay, I will admit when I received my Kiln hoody top and bottoms I was a little iffy on how warm it was actually going to keep me in the low N. Idaho temps. I WAS IMPRESSED! I absolutely love my kiln set. Over the last handful of hunts I have found myself hiking in my kiln top and wishing I could take off my catalyst pants and hike in my base layers alone. My last hunt was in 20 degree weather with a windchill in the mid-teens and the kiln base layer did great at regulating my body temp. On one hunt I made the mistake of pairing my Kiln top with an old poly-pro base layer... I was more than warm but that decision also prevented the merino wool from doing its job properly and I ended up sweaty and my next to skin layer (kiln hoody) was drenched in sweat. The base layers did far beyond what my expectations. I currently have the Women's Fuse Crew enroute to add to my layering system.
As far as the fit... the kiln fit perfect in all the right places. It is thin so you don't feel like Ralphie from A Christmas Story. Just as another review mentioned, the seems are in the right places so there isn't any uncomfortable scratching and the material is super soft. Best of all, caring for the garment is super easy and dries incredibly fast (hang-dry).
