I've had these for a fall and spring season. Wore them on a CO first season rifle elk hunt last year. Temps were cold (down to about 15F at night) and we had up to 10 inches of snow. I paired the Catalyst pants with a mid-weight base layer and my legs never got cold. Really can't say enough about how comfortable they are. For hiking and sleeping! We hiked through falling snow for hours and I had to take my shot laying down in snow and no water made its way through the pants. I wouldn't rely on them to be waterproof in rain, but in those snowy situations they were perfect. I also wore them during turkey season this past spring in New England. Again, very comfortable and versatile during the early season when temps were chilly. My only complaint has to do with the suspenders. The front clips sit right at my hip bones where my pack sits, which becomes painful in a hurry. If I have to hike for any substantial distance with a pack in these pants, I ditch the suspenders, add a belt, and I'm all good.
I have only tried these on at home and have not worn in the field so this review is primarily based on fit. I was concerned with the sizing here because I wear XLT in the corrugates. My waist is about a 36/38 and inseam is a 34-36 depending on the cut and style of the pants. The XL ended up fitting perfectly. Plenty of length and the waist line was just right, without the need of a belt or suspenders (but it's nice to have the option for both).
There is a lot of room in the seat and thighs and then tapers towards the foot, which I love. There is plenty of room to layer underneath but you don't have to walk around the woods feeling like the marshmallow man.
The crotch is made out of what appears to be the corrugate material, so super stretchy allowing you to crouch down without any stress on the seams.
I layered puffy pants both underneath and on top. It was a perfect fit for both. Would definitely need to tuck the puffys into your socks when layering under just because the bottom of the legs does taper so much and makes them ride up a little.
These definitely feel toasty and should fit the bill for 90% of what I do which is usually mid November through mid December in the Northeast. I might consider hanging onto the corrugates for early season, but these would probably still work with no base layer depending on how hot it gets.
Not sure what to expect from durability. I ran the catalyst jacket last year with no issues or damage busting brush. I can't picture these holding up the way the corrugates do, but they definitely feel like the construction is solid with good seams.
Looking forward to trying them this fall!
I had to exchange these pants for a larger size. I was at the upper end of the size range for a Med, and thought these would work, but no room for a thicker base layer. I am hoping the Large won't be too long. Customer service was great!
Purchased this piece for a week-long mule deer hunt in ID, but have worn this whitetail hunting in the east as well. It's warm, quiet, and holds up to some moisture, but will eventually soak through. My hunting partner had Obsidian pants, and these pants picked up significantly less stickers and needles when hiking through the woods. I haven't noticed any picks or wear on the pants after a few weeks of constant use. I got pretty muddy and washed them in a creek, let them dry and they looked brand new again.
First impressions: They fit great, slightly baggy on me but I plan on taking them into the late season with some heavy base layers so a little room is preferred. Love the suspenders, keep pants exactly where you want them to be with no need for a belt. For how lightweight and thin these are, they are very warm. Just trying them on for 10 minutes in 70° and I was feeling toasty, so I'm looking forward to getting them out into some colder weather. These pants combined with the jacket, you literally don't make any sound, the fabric is perfect. I plan on using the Catalyst system as my main outerwear and utilizing base layers for extra warmth and so far I'm very impressed with these. Will post another review after the season.
