I replaced my scentblocker alpha suit with the Catalyst this year and couldn’t be happier! I’m currently sitting in the stand writing this so what better time to do a review. It’s 41 with a 8 mph on Oct 19th, I have a base, mid and insulating weight merino wool layers on and I’m comfortable. It’s cool feeling out but I’m not cold and the wind has not penetrated the outer catalyst jacket and pants. Im 6’5” 220 lbs and originally went with an XL but when I put all my layers on it was snug fitting which is not what I want for now hunting. XXL it’s perfect when layered up and wearing it without the layers the waist draw strings on the jacket close up the bottom nicely.
These are my new favorite pants for...well...just about anything. The most comfortable pants I've ever owned, hands down. Been using them mostly out in the field at work, and for long hikes both on and off trail. But the fact is, these are also great for sitting on the couch watching football.
The first thing I noticed is just how silent they are when walking, which is something I'd never really thought of in the past during my hikes. They are decently water resistant, though water will eventually soak in. They are warm but on my first outing in 65 degree weather on a steep hike, they weren't hot at all.
Fit: Here's the deets...I'm 6'3", 185lbs. Purchased a size L. The length is perfect. The waist is loose (I'm a 33 waist and these fit like a 36). Based on reviews, I expected this might be the case, but the size M would likely be too short. I like these well enough that i'll probably take them to tailor and have them taken in.
I purchased these to use for early season archery and water fowl. Very soft, quiet and comfortable. Not as water proof as I would like but as long as it’s not a complete down pour, you won’t get soaked.
I purchased the Obsidian's last year. They were comfortable, but not insulated at all, definitely a warm weather pant. I was always concerned about snagging them. I replaced them this year with the Catalyst Pant. I LOVE these pants. They fit great, they are quite, lightly insulated, and durable. I shot a nice doe on my first sit wearing them. They must be a lucky pant too! It was 43 deg at sun up. I did not wear a base layer. They had the perfect amount of insulation to keep me comfortable. If it was any cooler, I'd go with a light base layer. I ordered the L. They are roomy in the waist, but I will have room for base layers underneath when it's colder.
I really liked these pants. I suspected they were a little more durable than the merino pants, so I used them when I thought there would be more crawling, or dealing with brush and thorns. They worked well for me. I was in the Colorado Rockies and didn’t wear any base layer underneath in September. No issues with cold, tears, or anything like that.
