By far my least favorite FL piece. First the sleeves are too tight. Uncomfortably so. Second, why this piece only has insulation in the front and shoulders is baffling to say the least. There's nothing in the back or sides so you cannot wear this on it's own even in high 50 degree weather with a slight breeze without freezing to death. And it makes a poor midlayer, as I find fleece such as the Klamath, to be much warmer for it's weight. There's so many other pieces out there from completing companies that makes a piece like this that is so much warmer as a midlayer, and warm enough to be on its own for cooler weather such as the 50/60s. Hard pass. Also, why has First Lite deleted my past reviews?
I had posted a review previously but it seems to have disappeared (hmmm)...
Like others have said, this piece is very restrictive/tight in the shoulders, forearms, and armpits. I even tried a buddy's XXL and it was still tight. The uninsulated back is another weakness of this piece. I saddle hunt and that open back significantly lessens the temperatures you can use this in. Again, like others have said, it's more of an overpriced hoody than a viable jacket. Pockets are nice and the hood is great. You would think that a direct-to-consumer company would have a more palatable price tag and better sizing/quality control. If given the chance again, it'd be a hard pass from me.
I’ll start with the few things I do like of this sweatshirt. The merino material is soft and silent. The forearms are very snug, helps with long sleeves bunching up with multiple layers or for archery hunters but that’s about it.
Now for the cons, after reading the description and reviews I was pumped to order this piece, but for the price I expected more of a jacket or outer layer which this is not. Sizing wise I’m usually between a L or XL so it just depends on the fit I’m going for with first lite. I originally ordered a large and it was like wearing a scuba suit, didn’t examine it much which is my biggest regret as I would have just returned it and gotten something else. Exchanged it for the XL assuming it would fix all of the problems but the fit is truly awkward. If you have any build at all this will be uncomfortably tight across the front of your shoulders along your collarbones, almost feeling like you have a layer under that’s bunching up but it’s just the jacket. I thought it might stretch and not have that problem after a couple wears but no luck. The forearms are almost overly tight and just adds to the awkwardness of it. There is an odd amount of insulation in the chest and abdomen while the back is basically a t-shirt. It is not warm, weather or wind resistant, and it makes a poor mid layer, I’d rather just go without for the day so I almost never wear this piece in the field now. I’d rather just bring the guide jacket, which is amazing. I wear this occasionally around town to find some use, but complain about the fit almost every time. Upset with myself for keeping this piece, if you’re on the fence the heavier merino long sleeves or the guide jacket are much better options and you could probably pick up both for about the same price. I truly love all of my other first lite gear but this is definitely the bad apple. Beware.
I’ve been looking at this garment for well over a year now and finally pulled the trigger. I am so bummed I waited so long!! Had a chance to wear it for the first time today on a late season duck hunt in northern Michigan during a snow storm and was so impressed. I wore it as a mid layer and was blown away by how it performed. Fit and functions are perfect, I highly recommend this piece :-)
