Obsidian Merino Pants

Ripstop Merino and Stretch Nylon

$180.00 USD

Color/PatternFirst Lite Cipher

Silent, odor resistant, and comfortable from 100 degrees into late season, the Obsidian merino pant takes the torch from the best-selling Kanab 2.0 pant with the fit being based off our hugely popular Corrugate Guide Pant. The Obsidian's ergonomic design and proprietary, stretch merino/nylon fabric work in conjunction to move and flex with the body and provide maximum durability all while preserving the qualities you love about Merino. Reinforced with rip-stop nylon, this woven merino pant has no UV signature or shine and fends off odor-causing bacteria better than any synthetic. Stretch nylon panels also enhance range of motion and provide durability and support in high stress areas. The Obsidian pant is equipped with detachable suspenders for a superior fit with pack or harness and can be used with other First Lite pants. This piece is machine washable and will dry quickly over a branch or on a line. These features make the Obsidian a superior choice for a wide range of stationary and active hunting applications.

My favorite pants

I bought these late last summer and wore them on a few backpacking trips and on a 2nd rifle season elk hunt in Colorado last fall. I couldn't be happier with the pants. They are the most versatile piece of clothing I own. I kept cool hiking up mountains in 75 degree weather, and paired with my fuse long johns I stayed toasty warm glassing on windy 20 degree days out elk hunting. Well worth the price tag. Stopped by to pick up a 2nd pair when writing this review. Of the 3 First Lite pants I own (corrugate guide, guide lite, obsidian merino) these are easily my favorite and by far the most quiet. The suspenders are a great bonus as well. I am a 32x32 normally and the M fits me like a glove.

Must have Pants

These are by far my favorite pants. Their ability to maintain temperature control is fantastic and which allows you to wear these pants in varying seasons. They are lightweight, fit nice, dry fast and breath well. I use them on the majority of my hunts. I would recommend them to anyone! The suspender option is very nice.

Fit Comments: These run relatively slim in the calf and ankle area. Realizing this is intentional, but it can be difficult to get over boot tops
Location: All areas

Perfect for their intended purpose

Most comfortable of all First Lite pants. Not intended for use in brush/thorns. There are complaints of these not holding up in rough conditions, which is precisely why they shouldn't be worn in conditions like that. Of course 100% merino will get snags and pulls in brush. The only suggestion I would have to make them a little tougher, would be to reinforce the rear somehow.

Not good performance or pocket zippers

Pants do not dry quickly, and do not prevent odor better than other synthetics I have worn. In fact they start to smell like a damp pelt. In the upper end of temps they are recommended for (70s) they are too warm. In the mid range, (50s) they stay damp for a good while. Below 30 degrees they will dry but snow sticks to them, wind blows right through, and they arent going to provide insulation value without a shell piece. The upper thigh pocket is poorly placed to ride on top of your left quad and all of the zippers are large and annoying. The cargo pockets are a nice concept, but the hand pockets are not. Lots of burrs and vegetation sticks very well, oftentimes making plenty of noise. Also, test the uv reflectivity of FL camo patterns and you'll find the white spots very bright, especially if elastic fibers are in the fabric.
