Bought these with the only purpose to hunt in. They are my go to pair of pants now for pretty much any outdoor activity. I wear them fishing constantly when I'm just sitting by the river /. creek in central Indiana going for crappie. I have also worn them on pretty much every camping trip too. They are great by the fire on a cold night or going for an early morning hike. Overall I can't find a reason not to wear these pants.
I only use these for temps below 40, but you could use them in temps up to about 55 or so. They are warm when coupled with the right base layer. A good choice for an October elk hunt in the rockies.
I purchased the First Lite Catalyst Soft Shell pants in Dry Earth for a couple of main reasons. First, I own a pair of FL Kanab 2.0 pants. Fabulous pants but a little light for mid to late season. They’re okay with multiple layers of Merino wool long johns for late October and November (for me...I’m a light weight). But I wanted something that could take me into the different seasons and conditions in the British Columbia interior that included warm temps, cold, snow, wind and occasional wet. I had a pair of competitor’s late season, insulated hunting pants: too long in the crotch, baggy and noisy! Wore them once. Awful pants. So, and the second reason, I searched for something that could be more of a Swiss army knife pant. Watching the MeatEater show (Steve Rinella) was a big influence. Christmas was coming, FL had a sale, and I snagged these pants after researching them with my criteria. Yes, I looked over the other offerings on the FL site, and I researched other brands before making the move (took a few weeks; my MO for anything I buy).
The pants got here and I actually wore them around the house Christmas day. I’m about a 32 waist and these are unbelievably comfortable, perhaps even more than my Kanab 2.0. Fit like a glove (sz medium). I can bend and kneel and walk without any binding or discomfort at all. Went for a walk around an orchard in the snow and low 30’s F (-2 C here). Comfortable and warm and absolutely quiet. Not “sort of” quiet or some marketing ploy “quiet.” These are genuinely silent (one of my criteria). Had to plow the driveway the next day, so I put them to the test again (along with new hunting jacket system). Stopped the wind, and stayed warm and comfortable for the whole 1.5 hours outside. Then, I let my son borrow them to go for a long hike with his girlfriend up the mountain. He was impressed. I wore them again in sub temps for a snowshoe hike in the mountains. 2.5 hours followed by another couple of hours standing around a fire pit talking life and bragging these pants up. Altho I wore Merino wool long johns underneath for the hike, I was comfortable the entire time of shoeing, did not overheat in the legs, and probably could’ve got by without the long johns.
I have been driving my family crazy going on about these pants (and jacket). I’ve never enjoyed such versatile, quality gear before for hunting... or, in this case, general purpose. I definitely got a good idea of what they’ll be like for the hunt next season... or on a hunt with Steve and crew (still waiting for that call, Steve!). Bottom line, these are remarkable pants. I figure they’ll replace my Kanab pants and I’ll just use these for the whole season. Well done, First Lite. In fact, that’s an understatement.
These pants are perfect as a cooler weather pant. Amazingly comfortable, soft liner and quiet. Offer great water resistance and warmth. Layering with various base layers underneath and get you from the 50s into the teens. Pockets are function and though out, Fit is perfect for me
These are hands down the most comfortable and durable pair of pants that I own. I've used them in layout blinds, A-frames, brush beating, scouting, and fishing. They are comfortable and warm. Just the pants I was comfortable in as low as 40-50°. Add a little insulation and I got as low as single digits. I bought mine slightly large figuring on adding insulation underneath and I was right to do so. Even without the insulation though it is a comfortable fit. Also, the flexibility is a huge selling point for me. When you're jumping logs and sludging through swamps it helps a lot compared to some other brands without the flex of this fabric.
These pants are not too baggy or too tight they are perfect for my 33 waist in a large. For several days I have wore them in the low 40s with a furnace layer under them I stilk feel warm but any colder I would suggest solitude. But the way they feel just like most products first lite has to offer is unparalleled. These are my favorite go to all around pants!
This pant was great for my pa rifle season. I have worn them through all the terrain pa has to offer. They hold up I have not found a better company to outfit me.
These pants are hands down the best i've ever owned. From the fabric face being extremely quiet and comfortable, to the interior of the pant being soft and warm. The bottoms also have a nice conforming boot cut that will easily fit over a hiking boot. These pants can get me from 15 degrees of active hunting, to mid 40's. In higher temps i wear a lighter pant. With proper layering though these are very lightweight, flexible, and quiet. You will have no trouble stalking up on whitetails, or busting brush for moose. I am a hunting guide in Maine, and guide moose during both bull seasons and our cow season spending a total of approximately 25 days in a wall tent, and wearing them day in and day out. They have held up now for 3 years of hunting everything from spring turkey on a cool morning, to moose and whitetail. I have stained them with blood many times over and it has always washed out as well. You won't regret this purchase.
Can’t start to explain how comfortable these pants are and something so simple as suspenders make this product even better. Plenty of pockets in the right places to hold your gear without restrictions. Think I’ve found the last hunting pants I will ever buy!
First time out in 30 degree weather with a slight wind. Kept me warm with proper layers. Proper layering will keep you warm regardless of temp. Great product. Quiet and not bulky.
