Sawtooth Hybrid Jacket

300g Merino-X with DWR Nylon

$210.00 USD

Color/PatternFirst Lite Cipher

The Sawtooth Hybrid Jacket sets a new standard in versatility for western and treestand hunters alike. 20.5 micron, 300g Merino-X wool provides the extreme odor resistance and breathable warmth you've come to expect from First Lite Merino, while DWR coated nylon panels provide critical durability and water resistance where you need it most--the chest and shoulders. Body-mapped to preserve core body temperature, we've added 60g 37.5 synthetic insulation behind the durable nylon panels in the chest for added insulation and wind resistance. The merino back allows for greater airflow in the mid and lower back where packs and trees trunks typically cause heat and moisture to build. Worn as a light outer layer for brisk early-season days or worn in conjunction with other outwear for added warmth on winter days, the Sawtooth Hybrid defines versatility in a cornerstone of the First Lite layering system.

Sawtooth: Sizing Note: For the Men's Sawtooth Jacket, we recommend going up one size for a more comfortable fit. For additional questions please contact Customer Service through chat or by phone (208-806-0066).

Perfect layer

This jacket was perfect straight out of the gates. First hunt I used them in Ohio as a second layer of 3. Then I went on a hunt down in Louisiana and it was a perfect outer layer for duck hunting and deer stand sitting! Highly recommended

Very versatile

I bought this for elk hunting in the mountains last fall but I now wear it almost every day here in the Midwest. It is at its best when I'm working fairly hard in cool to cold weather, for activities like cutting wood and winter running. It is perfect for these activities between about 15 and 45 degrees. The close fitting hood and very long sleeves mean I do not usually need a hat or gloves. For stationary activities like stand hunting, it is a good mid-layer. It doesn't have enough insulation or wind-proofing to keep you warm by itself if you're not active, but that's not the point of this jacket. If I was to start over with my hunting wardrobe, for tops I would only get a couple short sleeve synthetic t-shirts, this jacket, and a heavily insulated outer coat. That is all I can conceive of needing in the Midwest and the Rockies. Well, maybe a rain jacket, too.

Fit: my perfect size is usually Large-Tall. Based on FL's recommendation, I went with XL and it is a good fit for me. The body and sleeve length are about right. It is a bit baggy through the torso but not overly so. I'm 6'3", 220 lbs, average build.

Awesome Jacket

Fit is fantastic, super comfortable, love the good, great lightweight jacket for bow season, early spring hunts and even mild winter hunts. I have a broad chest and big shoulders and it still fits like a glove. Highly recommend

Outstanding hoodie

I live and hunt in Colorado and the Sawtooth is my go to in the woods and for everyday. I love this hoodie! Great for early mornings during archery as well as warmer winter days rifle hunting. It cuts wind very well, doesn't stretch after several days in a row and fits like a glove. Dont hesitate to give it a try! I am a flightly smaller frame at 6ft 170 but I have rather long arms and the large is perfect for me. It also gives me a little room to layer. The pockets are thoughtfully placed to access when wearing a pack.

First Lite's Best Piece

In a world of endless gear selection its hard to figure out what works and what does not. Materials, construction and fit are a hard combination to match and First Lite usually finds a way to do it, especially in there Merino-X clothing. Not all of First Lite clothing is first rate, but all of it could be. I own several pieces: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Obviously this is my opinion and others might disagree but thats personal preference. I rarely write reviews because we live in sensationalized world. Rarely do reviews do gear justice and warrant a purchase the cost of a grocery bill for a family of 5.

I've owned and worn the Sawtooth Hybrid for a little more than a year and it has far exceeded my expectations. Lets start out with materials: wool, merino wool to be exact, is a miracle material. Living in NW Wyoming, wool is king. We get a lot of precipitation and its cold most of the year. This is one of the reasons I choose to purchase this piece. I can wear it under or over other layers and stay toasty warm playing with the kids or cool backpack hunting in the Wind Rivers or Tetons. The body mapping on this piece is insane. Warm where it needs to be and cool where is should be. If all pieces of clothing were made this way we might not need to peel clothing off our body before we head over the next ridge. The nylon on the body mapping is very durable and I don't see any wear. Crawling through sagebrush and brushing on granite has had no affect on the material.

Construction is what we all want to know about. 'Will it last my western hunt'.... seems to be the new question I see on customer reviews. One thing some companies struggle with is mating stretchy material to stretchy high quality thread. I won't name any but I have clothing that hasn't stayed together more than a week because of poor stitching and thread quality. (It really pissed me off.) I can say that First Lite does a quality job of matching materials that work together. I have one stitch line on my right cuff that has started to unravel. Thats it. After +200 of days wearing this piece, thats it. Zippers are good. I don't wash it after every time I wear it to minimize degradation to the wool. The overall construction of the Sawtooth is excellent!

The fit of the Sawtooth is interesting. It took a while for me to get used to it because its longer in the chest and has long arms. For years I used a Patagonia R1 XL as a heavy base/light hoody. The Sawtooth has the exact fit. The zipper gets bunched up in your beard and the cuffs are bunched because they are cut for thumb holes. Thats why this is a technical, do-all piece. The zipper goes to your nose if the hood is up and the thumb holes are awesome when wearing gloves. As an everyday piece the fit can be a bit annoying but its still the first thing I put on in the morning. I am 6'4'' and 210 dad-bod athletic. Chest is 48". My waist is 35''. Ive never felt like this piece was to slim fit or overly baggy. Id say its a Athletic fit. I layers nicely under most of First Lite Jackets and over most of the light weight Merino-X layers just like they say. I wear XXL in all of First Lite outer layer Jackets.

When I got up this morning I put the Sawtooth Hybrid and Ill take it off when I go to bed. I'd wear it to bed if I was in my tent. I truly think that if you were to purchase on item from First Lite, this is the one you should get. It covers most conditions and is extremely versatile as stated. It has a good reputation and the construction is very good. Merino-X has changed the game for me on fast, lightweight, and warm hunting. With 3 kids it was a big purchase but it allows me to use my time in the mountains more efficiently and stay longer when I can. Cheers to the Sawtooth Hybrid Jacket!

Different, but love it!

I love the jacket...but don't know if I would consider it a "jacket". Its more of a thin sweatshirt with a built in vest. Arms and hood are thin and do not block any wind. It makes a great base layer for cold tree stand hunts. I am normally a medium but went up to a large per other reviews and am happy that I did. It is very comfortable with great pockets.

Great Mid Layer

I have had this coat for about a month now. I have used it as a mid layer on morning and evening sits and hikes on colder mornings. The temps have been anywhere from 30 to 50 degrees. I typically run very warm on hikes, so it typically comes off as soon as I start hiking. However it has been great on sits under a soft shell. The sleeves are a bit long on me (I'm 5'10" with an average wingspan), but they are nice to pull down so that I can use the thumb holes. It doesn't seem to hold scent at all which is nice for scent control. It has a lot of stretch so it doesn't impede movement at all. The one downside is that the zipper isn't super quiet, but as long as you put it on before the animals show up it would be fine. Overall I have really liked this jacket and the quality seems good so far.

Money for early-midseason

This has been on me or in my pack on every hunt this year so far. It is great with a pack and awesome for drawing a bow due to it's snug fitting arms. This also prevents it from layering as a jacket over anything other than a tshirt or baselayer if not sizing up. I would love to see a version of this with the insulation and nylon outer over the whole jacket to use as a warmer insulation option for the late hunting season. I run cold and found this a little thin on the arms and back when wearing when not active or without an additional windbreaker or puffy layer. It is more like a partially insulated baselayer than a true mid layer. As a slim person, I would not size up as the waist lacks a drawstring and would be too roomy in the body if trying to get more room in the sleeve by sizing up. Love how quiet it is. Bit of DWR is helpful for shedding some light precipitation. Back breathes well.

Perfect under a pack.

I bought this as a outer/mid layer for the late October A tag Elk opening in the Panhandle of Idaho. During hikes this was primarily my outer layer, breathing well, but plenty warm while active. During sits it became a mid layer under my Uncompahgre 2.0 Puffy Jacket and the SEAK Stormtight Jacket. I pack an Exo Mountain Gear K3 4800 and it seemed to work very well with this jacket's thinner back while under way. I will say you can tell the insulation is only in certain areas of this piece when you take your pack off. It's not a bad thing, it's how it is designed. The cut of this garment is perfect and I love how the sleeves are long enough and stay put when your arms are moving. The hood is perfect for pulling over a ball cap to break the wind or keep the cold off during the intermittent breaks or short glassing sessions.
