Bow Cast 2011 at Snowbird, Utah, was a huge success and provided plenty of challenges. First Lite's own Kenton Carruth was on hand to give it a run and had a terrific time. Due to unusually high snowfall totals, even for Utah standards, the course had no shortage of snow, making footing and travel challenging. Glare was a factor from the bright spring sun and more than one participant left looking a like a microwaved tomato.

The event was a three day shoot, comprised of three different courses. There was an intermediate round, an elite round and a very unforgiving "smoker round" where each participant could only use two arrows. No big deal, right? Well, when you're shooting at long distances and the targets are surrounded by rock, you can ruin two arrows pretty fast. Jeremy Wilkey took the gold in the Smoker with some unbelievable shooting.

Overall, it was a terrific event. There's nothing quite like shooting at 3D targets in a variety of different ranges, aspects and surroundings. Shooting at a 90 yard target through trees while simply trying to keep your feet beneath you in the wet snow is excellent preparation for the myriad variables we encounter as bow hunters in a real-hunt atmosphere. And taking those shots without worry is excellent for the confidence down the road. Stay tuned to the Campfire as we begin a continuing conversation about ethical shooting, including things like these 90 yard shots in the field.
